Levits not to run for second term in president's office

2023-05-10 LETA/TBT Staff

RIGA - Latvian President Egils Levits has decided not to run for second term in the president's office, the President Chancery's spokeswoman Justine Deicmane told LETA.

In the statement released by the President's Chancery, Levits said that the coalition's opinions on the presidential candidates had been divided - Levits was supported by the National Alliance and New Unity, while the United List and the opposition Latvia First supported another candidate.

"Nobody has a clear majority. In a situation like this there is a likely possibility that parties that do not represent Latvia's western course would have the decisive vote at the election of the president. It would be naive to think that such voted would be given just like that, without any political intention," he said.

In his opinion, this would be a signal that pro-Kremlin and oligarch circles would be deciding such important issue as election of the president. This would leave a mark on the presidential post and would make it hard for the future president to represent Latvia's interest and maintain a trusted dialogue with the allies. It would arise doubts about Latvia's political course.

2023-05-16

RIGA – The U.S. Department of Energy announced the donation of surveillance and auxiliary equipment to the Latvian State Border Guard, a $1.3 million investment in strengthening border security and radiation detection in Latvia and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Alliance.

U.S. Ambassador to Latvia Christopher Robinson and State Border Guard Chief Gen. Guntis Pujāts recently made an official visit to the Latvia-Belarus border to view infrastructure upgrades and discuss cooperative projects.

“Border security is an essential component of the United States’ security partnership with our Latvian Allies. We look forward to deepening that cooperation and we reiterate our commitment to ensuring that the NATO Alliance has the necessary capabilities to guard against all external threats,” Ambassador Robinson said.

In recent years, the U.S. Embassy has worked closely with the State Border Guard to enhance border security cooperation between the U.S. and Latvian governments.

Poland, Lithuania and Latvia are ready to close the border with Belarus, says Polish interior minister

Such a move would leave Belarus totally isolated from Europe

Poland, Lithuania and Latvia may jointly decide to close their borders with Belarus, if serious incidents involving the Wagner Group occur on the Belarusian border, Polish Minister of Internal Affairs Mariusz Kamiński revealed on Thursday.

The Polish minister did not rule out that “if the countries consider this to be the right response, it will lead to the complete isolation of Belarus.”

On July 19, Poland decided to move military units to the east after Wagner mercenaries began training Belarusian special forces a few kilometers from its border. Two days later, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Poland of territorial ambitions in the former Soviet Union and said that any aggression on Belarus would be considered an attack on Russia.

After the failed march of Prigozhin’s mercenaries on Moscow, aimed at overthrowing Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, the Wagner Group was given the opportunity to move to Belarus, negotiated by Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko. At least several thousand mercenaries are conducting territorial defense training for certain army units in Belarus.

Officials mull Ukraine's grain export through Latvia

Yesterday, 18:41 Authors: Eng.LSM.lv (Latvian Public Broadcasting), Ģirts Zvirbulis (Latvian Television)

New export roads are sought for Ukrainian grain, including through Latvian ports. However, in order for such a solidarity corridor to become operational, the Baltic and Poland must do thorough homework, Latvian Television reported July 31.

Over the last half-year around 40 thousand tonnes of agricultural production have been exported through Rīga port. Officials hope that in the near future these volumes will be counted in in not thousands but millions of tonnes.

The possibility of increasing Ukraine's transit volumes on Monday, July 31, was discussed by the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs and Agriculture Minister Didzis Šmits (United List).

“Latvia has both a desire and an opportunity to support Ukraine in setting up alternative grain export routes,” the president said after the meeting.

Prime Minister Kariņš confirms intention to form new government

Yesterday, 12:59 Update yesterday, 17:04 Politics Authors: Eng.LSM.lv (Latvian Public Broadcasting)

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity party) on August 11 announced his intention to end the current government coalition and form a new one.

Speaking after a meeting with his existing coalition partners, the National Alliance and the United List, Kariņš said they had rejected his proposals for a ministerial reshuffle and revised priorities. However, despite effectively deciding to collapse the coalition, he is not resigning because he wants the transition to the next government to happen quickly, he said.

Kariņš told the media he had just two choices – reinvigorating the existing coalition along his preferred model or forming another government – and that while he had not heard any objections to his new list of priorities, the existing partners were unwilling to see an extensive shuffling of ministerial portfolios take place.

Latvia could receive missile defense systems within two to three years - defense minister

2023-09-08 LETA/TBT Staff

RIGA - Latvia could receive various missile defense systems within two to three years, and talks are underway on the possibility of delivering them earlier, outgoing Defense Minister Inara Murniece (National Alliance) said in an interview on TV3 channel.

The relatively long delivery time is basically due to the fact that these products are currently in very high demand, the minister said. Currently, Latvian airspace is mainly protected by NATO air patrols.

The Latvian defense ministry has three missile system projects - coastal defense against ships, medium range air defense systems and missile artillery.

Latvia and Estonia have jointly chosen to purchase the IRIS-T medium-range air defense system, which means that this will be the largest military procurement since Latvia regained its independence. The potential value of the contract and other details are not being disclosed, but deliveries of the systems could start in 2025. It was previously reported that around EUR 600 million could be spent on air defense systems.

Latvia’s parliament votes to allow same-sex civil unions

Public opinion remains divided on homosexuality in the Baltic nation.

NOVEMBER 10, 2023 7:20 AM CET

Latvian lawmakers voted on Thursday to allow same-sex civil unions, providing same-sex couples with legal recognition for the first time. However, same-sex couples will still have fewer rights than married couples.

The legislation allows same-sex couples to register their partnership, giving them hospital visitation rights as well as tax and social security benefits, but not the right to adopt children or inheritance. It is due to take effect in mid-2024.

“This is a good day. Society has taken an important step in creating a modern and humane Latvia,” said Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa on X, adding that the legislation “sends the signal that all families are important.”

President Rinkēvičs visits Ukraine

Yesterday, 22:14 Authors: Eng.LSM.lv (Latvian Public Broadcasting)

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs arrived in Ukraine on an official visit on Friday. He visited the Chernihiv region, which Latvia is helping to reconstruct following the death and destruction wreaked by Russia.

The official visit to Ukraine began with a visit to the village of Yahidne. It is located north of Kyiv and was badly damaged last year when the full-scale Russian invasion began.
(...)
As part of the visit, the state president also familiarized himself with the implementation of support projects funded by Latvia. So far Latvia has allocated around 5 million euros for reconstruction projects in the Chernihiv region.

Latvia to Deport Over 1,200 Russian Citizens

World » RUSSIA | December 28, 2023, Thursday // 17:32

Latvia has declared its intention to forcibly deport over 1,200 Russian citizens who have reportedly failed to formalize their legal status in the Baltic country. This decision, announced via the national radio of Latvia and reported by TASS, comes as a consequence of these individuals not having applied for any form of residence permit in the country by November 30.

According to the announcement, these individuals were holders of permanent residence permits in Latvia, the validity of which expired in September. In order to continue residing in the country legally, they were required to pursue EU permanent resident status, which necessitates demonstrating a basic understanding of the Latvian language and possessing sufficient financial means to sustain themselves in Latvia.
