MADRID, Dec 25 (Reuters) - Six people died and two were injured after a passenger bus careened off a bridge and plunged into an overflowing river in northwestern Spain, emergency services said on Sunday.

Two survivors - the vehicle's 63-year-old driver and a female passenger - were pulled out of the river by firefighters with rope and taken to nearby hospitals with varying degrees of injury.

The driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs, a police spokesperson told Reuters.

Prince Harry's book sold ahead of official launch date in Spain

By Charlie Devereux

MADRID, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Several bookstores in Spain were selling the much-awaited memoir by Britain's Prince Harry on Thursday, five days ahead of the book's official launch date.

A Reuters reporter bought a Spanish-language copy of "Spare", which was due to be published on Jan. 10, at a large bookstore in Madrid.

A scan of the book confirmed a passage first reported by Britain's Guardian newspaper in which King Charles' son described being knocked to the floor during an argument with his older brother and heir to the throne, Prince William.

Initial attempts to purchase the memoir were unsuccessful. At one shop, the seller said the book had already sold out.

Spanish farmers protest against plans to curb water supply for irrigation

Reuters

MADRID, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Thousands of farmers protested in Madrid on Wednesday over Spain's plan to reduce the amount of water taken from the Tagus river to irrigate agricultural land in the country's southeast.

Spain experienced its hottest year on record in 2022. The heat, accompanied by a long drought throughout most of the year, caused reservoirs to fall to critical levels.

Environment Minister Teresa Ribera said on Tuesday the curbs were necessary to prepare the country for the effects of climate change.

By John Irish

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Spain's foreign minister said on Tuesday that Madrid and London were closing in on a deal to find a definitive solution settling the post-Brexit status of Gibraltar.

The status of Gibraltar and how to police the border with Spain has been a point of contention since Britain's 2016 vote to leave the European Union. The peninsula was excluded from the exit deal reached between Britain and the EU.

"I see a constructive spirit from the British side on the agreement related to Gibraltar," Spain's Foreign Affairs Minister Jose Manuel Albares told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Gibraltar accuses Spain of 'gross violation of sovereignty' over customs operation

Reuters

MADRID, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Gibraltar on Friday accused Spain of a "gross violation of British sovereignty" after two customs officials entered the British overseas territory during an anti-smuggling operation.

Early on Thursday, two Spanish customs agents were injured after rocks were thrown at them on a Gibraltar beach. Their small boat had lost power while chasing suspected tobacco smugglers, according to Spanish media reports.

Spain trains Ukrainian volunteers ahead of expected Russian offensive

Reuters

TOLEDO, Feb 9 (Reuters) - When Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022, Alona, a Ukrainian who has lived in Spain for 14 years, felt compelled to return home to defend her country.

Early this year the 35-year-old joined the Ukrainian armed forces, and just a few days later found herself back in Spain receiving basic combat training from the Spanish army.

Alona, from Lutsk in Ukraine's Volyn region, is one of 192 soldiers who arrived in Toledo, central Spain, on Jan. 12 to begin a five-week course. Back home, Kyiv is bracing for a possible Russian offensive this month to mark the first anniversary of its invasion.

"I am afraid that now in February we will be attacked again and they will hurt us even more," Alona said.

Spain's Constitutional Court rules in favour of 13-year-old abortion law

Reuters

MADRID, Feb 9(Reuters) - Spain's Constitutional Court on Thursday upheld a 13-year-old law that allows women to abort on demand within the first 14 weeks of pregnancy, after the divisive issue resurfaced following a regional far-right party's effort to limit abortion access.

The ruling comes after the court was revamped in December with the conservative faction losing clout, which led it to dismiss the appeal brought by the centre-right People's Party (PP) in 2010 against the law passed by the Socialist government that year.

Spain to extend seasonal migrant workers programme to Senegal

By Belén Carreño

MADRID, March 2 (Reuters) - Spain is extending a so-called circular migration programme to its first sub-Saharan African country, bringing in at least 100 people from Senegal to work on its farms during the harvest season, a government source said.

The programme, due to start in April, aims to replicate the success of a 22-year-old circular migration scheme with Morocco in which around 15,000 seasonal workers are brought in to work each year in Spain's agricultural sector for a limited time before returning home.

Spain busts Ukrainians robbing refugee compatriots

The criminal ring has deprived seven wealthy families of more than €1 million in cash and valuables

Spanish law enforcement has busted a multinational gang specializing in robbing wealthy Ukrainian refugees, the country’s Guardia Civil police force announced on Friday. The gang, composed primarily of Ukrainian nationals, “had specialized in this type of victim since they usually bring all their savings and valuables,” the authorities said in a statement.
(...)
The core of the gang was seven Ukrainian nationals, with three Russian nationals, a couple and their adult son providing ‘logistical support’ for the robbers, including by driving the team itself and the items stolen during the robberies.

All told, the group managed to steal some €1.25 million in cash and assorted valuables, such as jewelry and electronics, from seven Ukrainian families. A collection of postage stamps, estimated to be worth around half a million euros, was the most valuable single item, according to the police.

Spain promotes gender parity in politics, business ahead of Women's Day

Reuters

MADRID, March 7 (Reuters) - Spain's leftist government rolled out a draft bill designed to boost the share of women in politics and business on Tuesday, on the eve of International Women's Day, and further advance gender equality in one of the world's leading countries on the issue.

The Equal Representation Law will apply the principle of full gender parity to electoral lists and impose a 40% minimum female representation on boards of directors of big companies and governing boards of professional associations.

Spain's Socialists extend lead in CIS poll, trail in others

MADRID, March 17 (Reuters) - If Spain's elections due at the end of the year were held today, the ruling Socialists would win with a five-point lead, according to a poll on Friday that contrasts with recent surveys that put the centre-right People's Party in front.

The poll by the Centre for Sociological Studies (CIS) showed the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez taking 32.7% of the vote, widening its lead by two percentage points from the previous month.

New ‘trans law’ means Spain is no longer a free country, says head of major Spanish lawyers’ association

In an exclusive interview, Spanish lawyer Polonia Castellanos, head of the Christian lawyers’ association Abogados Cristianos and human rights expert, explains how Pedro Sánchez’s far-left government is threatening women’s rights, fundamental rights, and the rule of law in Spain with Brussels’ approval

March 17, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: OLIVIER BAULT

There has been much talk of “women’s rights” in Spain this month. There was Women’s Day on March 8, which in Spain is something very important in the media and in the streets, but there are also four new laws championed by the self-styled “progressive” parliamentary majority related to those rights: the “trans” law, which came into force at the beginning of March; the “only yes means yes” law; the gender parity law; and a reform of the abortion law, which will allow minors to have an abortion without informing their parents.

As for the so-called “trans law,” which is highly criticized by feminist associations, there were already such trans laws in some regions, such as Madrid, Andalusia and Murcia. What is going to change with this new law passed by the left-wing majority in the Spanish parliament?

Well, with this new law, from now on in all of Spain, if you say, for example, that you are trans, without even changing your name, without any surgery, then you are considered a woman. And because of this, you get advantages over biological women like me. When it comes to accessing jobs, for example, you will be given preference over me.

Another very dangerous thing is that if, for example, your 16-year-old daughter says she wants to have “sex-reassignment” surgery, then she can have her breasts cut off and her uterus removed.

And this can happen from the age of 16 without parental consent and without a medical endorsement, although a girl or a boy may say they want to have surgery without it being a “gender dysphoria” issue. It can be because they have another type of psychiatric illness. So they will be operated on, and, as we know, these surgical operations are not reversible and have destroyed the lives of many.

Spain's PM Sanchez to go on state visit to China

Reuters

MADRID, March 23 (Reuters) - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will visit China next week following a formal invitation by President Xi Jinping, as the Asian country seeks to position itself as a mediator in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The invitation, first reported by newspaper El Pais on Wednesday, was later confirmed by Minister for the Presidency Felix Bolaños in an interview with radio station Cadena Ser.
(...)
Bolaños said the visit would also be important from a trade and economic perspective, as Sanchez plans to meet with the Asia Pacific Forum and Spanish businesses operating in China.

Spain's PM easily defeats no-confidence motion brought by far right

Reuters

MADRID, March 22 (Reuters) - (This March 22 story has been corrected to fix the affiliation of the lawmaker who supported the motion in paragraph 2)

Spain's lower house of parliament on Wednesday rejected by a wide margin a motion of no confidence in the leftist government submitted by the far-right Vox party, as was widely expected.

Only one independent lawmaker joined the 52 Vox representatives in supporting the motion, while 201 deputies voted against it in the 350-seat house, and 91, mainly from the conservative People's Party (PP) abstained.

Vox was aware its motion would fail but its leader Santiago Abascal went ahead with the vote, creating a deep rift in the party, the third-largest in parliament after Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's Socialist Workers' Party and the PP.

Analysts say the move could potentially hurt Vox's popularity in an election year. Several recent polls projected Vox would get fewer seats than in the 2019 election.

Spain's Asturias ravaged by fires as authorities blame 'terrorist' arsonists

By Vincent West

SETIENES, Spain, March 31 (Reuters) - The lush region of Asturias in northern Spain was ravaged by more than 90 wildfires on Friday, most of them believed to have been started by arsonists whom the region's leader called "fire terrorists".

Over 600 firefighters were deployed to tackle the blazes and several towns have been evacuated as police closed off roads and highways.

The Spanish government has said it is worried more wildfires will flare this year after an unusually dry winter across parts of southern Europe and rising average temperatures due to climate change.

Spanish columnist tells compatriots to protest the country’s new gender law by abusing the system en masse

Spanish author Juan Manuel de Prada suggests a different approach to protesting the new gender recognition law introduced by Spain’s socialist government

April 06, 2023
editor: GRZEGORZ ADAMCZYK author: GRZEGORZ GÓRNY via: WPOLITYCE.PL

Renowned author Juan Manuel de Prada criticized a recently passed Spanish law that allows individuals to legally change their gender based purely on a personal declaration, and called on his compatriots to show the Spanish socialist government just how ridiculous the legislation is by registering en masse as the opposite gender.

In his weekly column for Spain’s ABC newspaper, de Prada said the legislation forced through by Spain’s left-wing administration is “unjust” and claimed the prerequisite for any legislation should be its compliance with the “oldest and first nature of all things.”

He described the law as a poison prescribed by a doctor as a remedy and expressed his concern over the wider implications the legislation could have on Spanish society.
(...)
The Iberian author called on millions of Spanish men to head to the government offices and register as women, and for women to register as men, claiming that under the new law, no one in Spain will be able to refuse their requests, as such an act only requires a declaration by the individual that they “feel” like the opposite gender.

“Only bringing absurdity to a logical conclusion can lead to its complete failure,” he added. “So perhaps it is worth a try?”
