Ottawa police move in on protesters (VIDEOS)

Cops in the Canadian capital have started arresting Freedom Convoy protesters after closing off part of the city

Rows of police faced off against rows of anti-mandate protesters in Ottawa, Canada on Friday. The demonstration has been fenced off, the media told by law enforcement to “keep a distance,” and arrests and vehicle seizures have begun.

Ottawa Police announced on Friday morning that they had arrested 15 people and towed four vehicles involved in the anti-mandate Freedom Convoy that has brought traffic to a standstill in the Canadian capital for the last three weeks. The announcement came a day after the protest area was cordoned off with fencing and barricades, and two of the demonstration’s organizers were detained.

Montreal’s Holocaust Museum relocating to new $80 million site in historic Jewish quarter by 2025

BY CALEB GUEDES-REED FEBRUARY 18, 2022 3:16 PM

(JTA) — The Montreal Holocaust Museum, which first opened its doors in 1979, will move into a new $80 million site in the city’s historic Jewish quarter in Plateau Mont-Royal by 2025.

Lined with hip eateries and indie bookstores and bordered by the city’s Gay Village to the south and Little Italy to the north, the Plateau Mont-Royal borough is now a creative hub for hipsters and artists. It was also once the home to several of Canada’s immigrant communities, including Jews leaving Europe after the Holocaust. The area’s Mile End neighborhood is still home to a large Jewish population.
(...)
The government of Quebec is covering $20 million of the cost of the building, and the rest is being financed by private donors. The museum is currently holding an international architectural competition to select the designer of the future building.

Daniel Amar, the museum’s director, said in a news release that “At a time marked by mounting antisemitism, racism, and discrimination against minorities… the new Museum will be unifying, inclusive, and a place to come together.”

‘Reminiscent of China’ – Euro MP Slams Trudeau for ‘Tyrannical Actions’ Against Truckers

PETER CADDLE 20 Feb 2022

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau has been denounced by a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) over the “tyrannical actions” he has taken against peaceful protestors taking part in the ongoing ‘Freedom Convoy’ demonstrations.

Cristian Terhes, a Romanian MEP, has denounced the “tyrannical actions” of Prime Minister Trudeau in regards to his actions against the ongoing Freedom Convoy protest.

The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group member went on to say that what Trudeau was doing was “reminiscent” of Communist China, and that the Canadian leader should be “isolated” by the international community over his actions.

“Justin Trudeau and his federal government must be isolated by the democratic international community to show revulsion at his tyrannical actions in Canada against peaceful protesters, who have been trampled under horse hoof as children have been batoned by federal security agents,” Terhes alleged in a statement sent to Breitbart London.

Canada to ban Russian oil imports, send anti-tank weapons and ammunition to Ukraine, says Trudeau

In just weeks, Canada has shifted to a policy of sending lethal aid to Ukraine

Ashley Burke, Peter Zimonjic · CBC News · Posted: Feb 28, 2022 1:28 PM ET | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

Canada is banning Russian oil imports and will send a third shipment of lethal weapons to Ukraine as its military continues to fight off better-armed Russian forces, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday.

"Yesterday, we announced that we would be sending new shipments of military supplies, including body armour, helmets, gas masks and night vision goggles," Trudeau said. "Today we are announcing that we will be supplying Ukraine with anti-tank weapons systems and upgraded ammunition."

Trudeau said the Canadian Armed Forces will provided airlift support to transport supplies and aid and to participate in other NATO efforts in support of Ukraine.

Ukraine government officials and members of its parliament have been calling on Canada and its allies to deliver more weapons — including guns and anti-aircraft missiles — to keep Russian forces from gaining control of key cities.

Defence Minister Anita Anand said Canada is sending 100 Carl-Gustaf anti-tank weapons systems and 2,000 rockets — ammunition for the shoulder-mounted weapons — from the Canadian Armed Forces inventory.

Popular snack targeted for resemblance to Putin

French Canadian restaurants struggle to rename gravy-laden fries dish

French Canadian restaurants are rushing to rename the ultra-popular snack poutine, concerned that its name’s resemblance to that of Russian President Vladimir Putin will upset customers caught up in a jingoistic frenzy over the war in Ukraine.

Poutine, an artery-clogging delicacy consisting of potato fries topped with cheese curds, gravy, and mayonnaise, was invented in Quebec in the 1950s and has since become ubiquitous in the Canadian province. ‘Poutine’ also happens to be the way the Russian president’s name is transliterated into French from the Cyrillic alphabet. The confusion apparently has some restaurant patrons frothing mad.

Moscow sanctions Trudeau and Canadian leaders

The foreign ministry in Moscow suggested Ottawa was competing with Washington in its "Russophobic rage"

The Russian Foreign Ministry has sanctioned over 300 Canadian individuals in response to a similar move by the Canadian government. Delivered on Tuesday in response to what it calls the “outrageous hostility of the current Canadian regime,” Moscow’s sanctions list includes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The list also includes the ministers of foreign affairs and national defense, and most of the deputies of the House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament.

CRTC bans Russian state-controlled TV channels RT, RT France from Canadian airwaves

Broadcasters Rogers, Bell and Shaw removed RT from their networks in February

Peter Zimonjic · CBC News · Posted: Mar 16, 2022 1:24 PM ET | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

Canada's telecommunications regulator has removed the the state-controlled Russian television network RT from Canadian airwaves.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced Wednesday afternoon that it was removing RT and RT France from the list of non-Canadian programming services and stations authorized for distribution in Canada.

The decision means broadcasters in Canada are no longer legally permitted to carry the channel.

The multilingual 24-hour news channel launched in 2005, when it was known as Russia Today, and now appears in more than 100 countries, according to its website.

Funded by the Russian government, the channel has long been described by critics as a propaganda outlet for the Kremlin.

Russia and Canada in Twitter spat over 'kindergarten-level' UN letter post

Reuters
March 18, 2022

March 17 (Reuters) - Russia accused Canada on Thursday of childishly annotating a letter it sent at the United Nations seeking support for its draft resolution on providing aid access and civilian protection in Ukraine, which Ottawa reacted to with pointed comments.

In a spat on Twitter, Canada's UN mission added multiple remarks to the March 16 missive from Russia's U.N. ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia.

Canadian military reports sagging recruitment as NATO ramps up deployment in eastern Europe

The Canadian Armed Forces says it's still struggling to recruit women

Ashley Burke · CBC News · Posted: Mar 23, 2022 6:10 PM ET | Last Updated: 6 hours ago

Canada's military is short roughly 7,600 trained members at a time when NATO leaders are meeting to discuss plans to ramp up deployment to eastern Europe in response to Russia's war on Ukraine. (Vadim Ghirda/The Associated Press)

Canada's military reports that it's roughly 7,600 members short of full strength — just as NATO is deploying more troops to eastern Europe in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The latest figure was recorded on Feb. 15 and shows a major shortfall in what the military calls its "trained, effective strength." The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has roughly 65,000 regular members.

"This is of course a number one priority for all of us, ensuring readiness is not affected by our current trained, effective strength," said Brig.-Gen. Simon Bernard, the military's lead on reconstituting the forces.

Gen. Wayne Eyre, chief of defence staff, said earlier this month that operational readiness is "one of the things that keeps me awake at night" as he laid out his plans to rebuild the military for an "increasingly dangerous future."

NATO's Sec. Gen. Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday the alliance is deploying four more battle groups to Slovakia, Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria as a show of unity and force in the face of Russia's unprovoked war on Ukraine. NATO leaders are expected to discuss whether to make that deployment permanent when they meet in Brussels on Thursday.

US, UK, Canada export credit agencies halt support to Russia, Belarus over Ukraine war

Reuters
March 23, 2022

WASHINGTON, March 23 (Reuters) - The export credit agencies of the United States, Britain and Canada said on Wednesday that they are withdrawing new export credit support for Russia and Belarus over Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In a joint statement issued by the U.S. Export-Import Bank, the agencies said they would continue financing support for exports to Ukraine.

"This decision builds on the wide-ranging packages of sanctions and measures imposed on the Russian Federation and Belarus since the beginning of military operations, and we encourage any ECA that has not already done so, to join us in this step to impose financial pressure on the two countries," the export credit agencies said in the statement

Handguns: Canada proposes complete freeze on ownership
By Leo Sands
BBC News

Canada should introduce a total ban on the buying and selling of all handguns, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said.

His government is proposing a new law that would freeze private ownership of all short-barrelled firearms.

The legislation would not ban the ownership of handguns outright - but would make it illegal to buy them.

Possession of small amounts of illicit drugs will be decriminalized in B.C.

Updated May 31, 2022 8:14 p.m. CEST
Published May 31, 2022 5:08 p.m. CEST

Quote:
The federal government has announced that starting early next year, British Columbia will be the first province in Canada to decriminalize possession of small amounts of illicit drugs for personal use.

The decision comes after the B.C. government requested an exemption under the federal Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, which makes it an offence to possess most controlled substances.

On Nov. 1, as the toxic drug crisis intensified, the province asked the federal government to decriminalize up to 4.5 grams of drugs for personal use in B.C. The exemption that’s been granted is for a smaller amount, and is cumulative for all illicit drugs on the person.

B.C. adults found to be carrying up to 2.5 grams of certain drugs including opioids, cocaine and methamphetamine will not be subject to arrest or charges, and the drugs won’t be seized.

Canada's Senate passes budget, greenlighting measures on housing, Russian assets

Reuters

OTTAWA, June 23 (Reuters) - Canada's Senate on Thursday passed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's budget, adopting a long list of measures including a two-year ban on foreign home buyers and the power to confiscate and sell assets seized in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The 450-page Bill C-19 passed the upper chamber 56-to-16 without any changes, and will become law after Royal Ascent, a formality.

The Liberal government laid out a budget in April geared at boosting affordability of housing with fresh funding and a promise to ban foreign investors from buying Canadian homes for two years, among other measures.

Montreal's Saint-Laurent borough pulls plug on drag queen storytime event for kids

Borough Mayor Alan DeSousa says council wants to discuss Barbada's performance before giving it green light

Barbada, left, was scheduled to read to kids in the Saint-Laurent library this November, but the event was suddenly nixed by the borough council. (Shari Okeke/CBC)

A well-known television personality and drag queen, Barbada De Barbades, says a Montreal borough has cancelled her upcoming storytime event for children at its local library, with little explanation.

Barbada, the stage name of Sébastien Potvin, has been reading uplifting stories to kids across Quebec for about five years — stories that send the message that it's OK to be different.

She said this is the first time in Quebec that an event she is paid to do has been cancelled in this way.

"Everything was perfect. We had the contract signed," Barbada said. From what she's since been told, the event, which included two readings, was nixed after the programming schedule went to borough council for approval.

Canada sends repaired Nord Stream turbine to Germany, Kommersant reports

Reuters

MOSCOW, July 18 (Reuters) - Canada sent a turbine for the Nord Stream gas pipeline to Germany by plane on July 17 after repair work had been completed, Kommersant newspaper reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the situation.

The return of the turbine from Canada to the Russian Portovaya compressor station, a crucial element of Nord Stream, has been in focus for the past month since Russian energy producer Gazprom (GAZP.MM) reduced gas supplies to Germany.
