Ireland has seen mass protests against soaring immigration numbers over the last year.

An independent Irish lawmaker has called for a referendum on immigration after recent polling revealed 75 percent of Irish people think the country is taking in too many refugees.

Speaking to Irish media outlet, Gript, Mattie McGrath TD believes the public concern on the issue is too great to ignore.

“The government must consult the people, I say by way of a referendum,” McGrath, who sits as an independent in the Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament, told the site.

“We want a proper open debate on this. We want an unhindered, unfettered media and we don’t want hate speech to be dangled in front of us when we talk about issues that are affecting our families, our grandchildren, and our generations to come,” he added.

Police are hunting a man who committed a sex act at a Birmingham tram stop. Detectives from British Transport Police asked for the public’s help to trace him after a man was seen masturbating at St Paul’s tram stop in the city’s Jewellery Quarter at around 7pm on Friday, April 22.

A man was said to have been ‘staring’ at a group of three women at the West Midlands Metro stop when he carried out the act. He fled when they shouted at him.

British Transport Police released an image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident. The man was dressed all in black, including with black footwear and had a beard.

A MAN has been jailed for three and a half years after sexually assaulting and strangling a teenager in Reading.

Adam Gerezgher, 28, of no fixed abode, was jailed after being found guilty by unanimous jury verdict of one count each of sexual assault, intentional strangulation and committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence.

A verdict was delivered after a week-long trial at Reading Crown Court in March which heard the incident happened at about 1am on October last year 8.

Police have warned the public not to approach a West London teenager suspected of stabbing a 17-year-old in May. Jayden Gubetini, also 17, from West London, is currently on the run and wanted by police in connection with a murder in Buckinghamshire on Sunday, May 7.

Victim Cameron Bailey, 17, was stabbed in High Wycombe at around 7pm and died from his injuries. Thames Valley Police describe the Northolt teenager they want to speak to as being around six feet tall, and as having black afro/plaited hair and brown eyes..

Surveyor Roberto Canepa, father of Camilla, the 18-year-old who died on 6 June last year after receiving a dose of AstraZeneca's anti-Covid vaccine, died of a sudden illness.

The 53-year-old man felt ill late yesterday afternoon in Zoagli, in the province of Genoa, where he was walking with some friends.

The illness, apparently a heart attack, was lightning-fast: Canepa collapsed and despite the immediate help he died.

To review, on Sunday Pfizer hiked its offer to a fourth and "final" figure of £55 ($92.67) a share, about $117 billion, which AstraZeneca quickly rejected. Since then, other AstraZeneca investors have stepped up to pressure the board to take the offer more seriously. Among them was Legal & General, AstraZeneca's 6th largest shareholder, which sent a letter to the board earlier this week urging takeover talks with Pfizer.

Germany: How support for the right is rising along with migration

A survey showed approval ratings for the right-wing party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), at a record high of 17-19%. About 65% of those surveyed said that the AfD’s critical stance on immigration was their reason to vote for the party.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD), a right-wing populist political party continues to rise in public opinion polls and could be on course to win three eastern German states in the 2024 elections, Reuters reported today (June 7).

In a survey conducted by Wahlrecht, an independent polling service that measures political sentiment, Germans were asked who they would vote for "if there was a general election next Sunday”.

AfD scored 17-19% nationwide, a record high for the party. The approval scores put AfD at par for second place with Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats Party (SPD). AfD was last at such highs in 2018 after Europe's migrant crisis, said Reuters.

These approval ratings indicate that support for the AfD party is up from fifth in the 2021 election when it secured 10.3% of the vote.

German news agency DW reported that in several eastern states, the AfD has long been the strongest political party.

(JTA) — The city of Vienna will tilt the statue of an antisemitic former mayor 3.5 degrees to the right in order to shift the viewer’s “perspective on it,” a move that some Jewish leaders are calling an inadequate way to deal with a dark chapter of the city’s history.

The city’s Twitter account announced the decision last Wednesday and included an image of what the tilted statue will look like.

Karl Lueger served as mayor of Vienna for 13 years until his death in 1910. He was known for antisemitic rhetoric that is said to have inspired Adolf Hitler, who lived in Vienna as a young man. Hitler wrote in “Mein Kampf” that he had “undisguised admiration” for Lueger.

Viennese artist Klemens Wihlidal had proposed the slight tilt, which is slated to happen sometime in 2024.

“With this, I would like to cause an irritation, or even more, a moment of insecurity, which may only become perceptible upon a second look,” he said in a press release, according to CNN. He added that he hopes the viewer will feel like the statue is “about to topple over or at least expect that it won’t stand for much longer.”

Oskar Deutsch, president of the Jewish Community of Vienna, told CNN that fully taking down the statue “would be more appropriate and in line with a sincere culture of remembrance,” adding that “squares, streets, bridges and other monuments are still named after antisemites all over Austria.” A street named after Lueger was renamed in 2012.
