Real wages in Czechia are falling at fastest rate on record, analysis shows

One report predicts there will be an increase in various negative socioeconomic trends between 2022 and 2024

November 30, 2022

Czechia is currently undergoing the sharpest drop in real wages in its independent history to date, as well as among the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Compared to last year, Czechs will earn approximately 170 billion korunas (€7 billion) less this year, according to a report from Cyrrus. Analyst Vít Hradil says real wages fell by 8.9 percent in the third quarter and will fall by 8.3 percent for the whole year, with high inflation being the highest contributing factor.

“The volume of wages that Czech employees would have to receive in addition in 2022 to maintain the standard of living of 2021 amounts to 170 billion korunas. That is exactly how much we will have to ‘moderate’ ourselves this year,” said Hradil.

According to him, the average Czech employee who works full-time will need 40,000 korunas (€1,600), i.e., 3,300 korunas (€135) per month, to reach the previous standard of living in 2022. Real purchasing power will thus return in time to 2018, the analyst calculated.

According to Hradil, the main reasons for the significant excess of consumer inflation over wage growth are the Russian-Ukrainian war, the resulting geopolitical conflict between the West and Russia, and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Czechia: EU’s EV charger network plan will probably fail

“Like most other member states, we consider the EP’s proposal to be completely unrealistic,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport

December 05, 2022
editor: REMIX NEWS author: MILOŠ CIHELKA, PRÁVO via: NOVINKY.CZ

The European Parliament (EP) requires that by 2026 there should be at least one charging station for electric cars every 60 kilometers on all major road routes in the EU. In the Czech Republic, however, this will plan will probably fail, according to the Czech Ministry of Transport.

According to the MEPs’ proposal, which should be enacted between 2021 and 2026, each station should also have an output power of at least 300 kilowatts and include at least one charger with an individual output of 150 kilowatts.

Currently, chargers with a power of 50 kilowatts are most often used at Czech stations.

The proposed rule, approved by the European Parliament in late October, is part of the Fit for 55 climate package, which aims to achieve a 55 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The regulation now heads to the European Council.

Construction is not worth it

Czechia already is, in terms of the ratio of electric cars to one charging station, in a flattering eighth place among EU states. However, the Czech Ministry of Transport and the main potential operators of chargers consider the European Parliament’s requirement to be difficult to fulfill even despite around 5 billion korunas (€205 million) in subsidies from the EU to support construction.

Czechia could accept tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees, says interior minister

Vít Rakušan warned, however, that the country must also know the limits of its social and healthcare systems to ensure they do not become saturated

Czechia is likely to accept tens of thousands more Ukrainian refugees, but it must remain vigilant as to its accommodation capacity and limits to its social and healthcare systems, the country’s Minister of the Interior Vít Rakušan said on Thursday.

Speaking after a meeting on the migration situation with his counterparts from Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria, Rakušan said that Czechia has accepted the most refugees from Ukraine per capita among the countries of the European Union.

Currently, according to Rakušan, the Ukrainian population makes up 3.4 to 3.7 percent of the population in the Czech Republic — that means roughly 355,000 to 390,000 people. Refugees from Ukraine have received over 460,000 temporary protection visas since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February.

Babiš vindicated: Former Czech PM found not guilty of fraud days before presidential election

The presiding judge ruled there was insufficient evidence to prove a crime had been committed

January 09, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: THOMAS BROOKE

Former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš was acquitted of fraud charges just days before the country’s presidential election in which he is a candidate.

The municipal court in Prague ruled on Monday that 68-year-old Babiš had not unlawfully obtained 50 million koruna (€2.2 million) in EU subsidies for the construction of a hotel and conference complex in Central Bohemia.

Both Babiš and his former aide, Jana Nagyová, had been indicted on subsidy fraud charges for which they both pleaded not guilty; the former Czech prime minister insisted the charges brought against him were politically motivated.

At the trial’s conclusion, which had dragged on since September of last year, Judge Jan Šott ruled the evidence provided by the public prosecutor had been insufficient to prove a crime had been committed.

“It is clear that the law enforcement authorities dealt with the case repeatedly with great care; however, the court disagrees with them in some aspects, for example, in the legal classification of the crime,” Šott said.

Ukrainians most common traffickers of illegal migrants into Czechia last year

Ukraine was the most registered nation of origin for detained people smugglers by Czech police last year, followed by Syria, Georgia, Turkey, and Czechia itself

January 12, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: THOMAS BROOKE

Among the people smugglers detained by authorities for trafficking illegal immigrants into Czechia last year, the highest number originated from Ukraine.

Figures published by Czechia’s Foreign Police and reported by the Echo24 newspaper showed Ukrainians topped the list of those caught transporting illegal immigrants into the country, followed by individuals from Syria and Georgia.

“In the period from Jan. 1 to Dec. 13, 2022, the Police of the Czech Republic detained 250 people on suspicion of committing the crime of organizing and facilitating the illegal crossing of the state border in accordance with Section 340 of the criminal code, most of them in Jihomoravské (144) and Zlínské regions (46).

“The most common nationalities of smugglers were citizens of Ukraine, Syria, Georgia, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Moldova,” said Captain Josef Urban, a spokesman of the Foreign Police in response to a question from the Czech newspaper.

The rise in Ukrainians working as people smugglers, trafficking predominantly North Africans and migrants from the Middle East into the country, was highlighted in an August 2022 report produced by the Crisis Information Team of the Czech Ministry of the Interior in which it stated:

Foreign Minister criticizes ambassador to Israel over meeting with pro-Russian activist

01/20/2023

Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský has criticized Czech ambassador to Israel Martin Stropnický for meeting with pro-Russian activist Zarko Jovanović.

He wrote on his Twitter account on Friday that he considered such a visit to be serious misconduct by the ambassador and will decide on further action next week.

Photos of Stropnický’s meeting with the delegation led by Freedom and Direct Democracy deputy Jan Hrnčíř were shared earlier by the deputy chairman of the lower house Jan Bartošek, who said the only option was Stropnický's immediate resignation.

Babiš clarifies NATO remarks with Poland PM, claims recent comments in live debate were taken out of context

The Czech presidential candidate was asked if he would honor NATO’s principle of collective defense should Poland or the Baltic nations be attacked

January 23, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: THOMAS BROOKE

Czech presidential candidate Andrej Babiš has accused the mainstream media of twisting his words to suggest the former Czech prime minister would not honor the country’s NATO obligations and send troops to defend Poland or the Baltic nations should they be attacked.

During a televised debate on Sunday evening, Babiš was asked whether the Czech Republic would send soldiers into an open conflict in the event of an attack on Poland or the Baltic states, to which he replied, “Where do you mean? To war? Certainly not.”

When pressed on the matter, the presidential candidate asked, “And why should we have an open conflict? I want peace.”

Babiš was asked if he would honor NATO’s principle of collective defense if he was the country’s commander-in-chief, to which he replied, “I am not the commander-in-chief. Yes, if I was.”

However, his remarks appeared contradictory, and later in the debate he told viewers, “I want peace. I do not want war, and I would not send our children and our women’s children to war under any circumstances.”

Czechia: Left-leaning Pavel defeats Babiš to become next president

Pavel is fiercely supportive of Ukraine, backs the introduction of euthanasia and same-sex marriage, and promotes adoption rights for homosexuals

January 28, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: THOMAS BROOKE

Former army chief Petr Pavel will become the next president of the Czech Republic after defeating former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš in this weekend’s presidential election.

Numerous media outlets called the election in favor of Pavel on Saturday afternoon after initial reporting predicted Pavel will win 58 percent of the vote to Babiš’ 42 percent.

“We can already say with certainty that Petr Pavel will be elected president of the Czech Republic today. There will also be a record turnout in the presidential elections,” said Martin Buchtík from the STEM research agency. With 97 percent of the vote counted, turnout remained over 70 percent.
(...)
In his youth, Pavel admitted to being a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia for more than four years. Most recently, he revealed during the election bid he had voted for the center-right Spolu alliance in the most recent Czech general election. He was subsequently endorsed by the alliance in his bid for Prague Castle.

The former army general has previously expressed his support for Czechia’s EU and NATO membership, and is fiercely supportive of Ukraine. He also backs the introduction of euthanasia and same-sex marriage, as well as adoption rights for homosexuals.

Petr Pavel: Ukraine deserves to join Nato, says new Czech leader

Czech President-elect Petr Pavel was chair of the Nato military committee from 2015-2018

By Rob Cameron
BBC News, Prague

Czech President-elect Petr Pavel has told the BBC that Ukraine should be allowed to join Nato "as soon as the war is over".

Mr Pavel, a retired Nato general, said Ukraine would be "morally and practically ready" to join the Western alliance once the conflict had ended.

In his first broadcast interview with the international media since his election, Gen Pavel gave a robust defence of Western military support to Kyiv, saying there should be "almost no limits" to what countries should send.

Speaking from the renaissance Hrzansky Palace, a few hundred metres from Prague Castle, he said for him sending Western fighter planes such as F-16s was "not taboo", but he was unsure they could be delivered in a timeframe that could prove useful to Kyiv.

Army chief: Czechs must prepare for NATO-Russia conflict

02/21/2023

In a forthright speech on Tuesday, the head of the Czech Army said that if there were a war between NATO and Russia, the Czechs would immediately become active participants. Karel Řehka told the country’s top brass that preparations must be made now for such a possibility.

The chief of the general staff of the Czech Army, Major General Karel Řehka, delivered an annual assessment of the previous year to the military’s top leaders in Prague on Tuesday morning.

The army chief said the only place he could begin was Russia’s war on Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, what happened was exactly what many military and security analysts had warned of for many years – and few believed them. We convinced ourselves that there was no threat of a major war in our civilised Europe. It was comfortable, as we didn’t have to sacrifice for our defence a lot of effort, money or human lives… The last year presented, and continues to present, our army with challenges that we have never faced.”

Karel Řehka said Czechia had to prepare now for a possible military clash between Russia and NATO, which the country joined in 1999.

Czechia won’t join Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia’s ban on Ukrainian grains

Czechia’s agricultural minister says a ban on food imports from Ukraine would go against the unified European market

April 18, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: MANDINER

Countries neighboring Ukraine, including Hungary, set up solidarity corridors to transport grain to EU ports by boosting rail transport capacity. At the same time, the European Union abolished import tariffs against Kyiv, resulting in Ukrainian crops flowing freely into Europe at depressed prices.
Ukraine’s grain imports to the EU were 287,000 tons in 2021, rising to nearly 2.9 million tons in 2022.

“I discussed the issue of imports of Ukrainian agricultural products with European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski at the end of the week. He clearly confirmed that these unilateral bans are unacceptable and the issue will be discussed by the ministers on April 25,” said Nekula.

Russia must be driven into submission or Europe risks further bloodshed, warn Polish, Slovak and Czech PMs

Only a comprehensive Ukrainian victory will ensure the future security of Europe, write Petr Fiala, Eduard Heger and Mateusz Morawiecki in a joint article for the U.S. magazine Foreign Affairs

April 24, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: THOMAS BROOKE

The end of the conflict in Ukraine must see Russia wholly defeated and withdrawn from all Ukrainian territories including Crimea, or the West risks legitimizing the hostile tactics of “authoritarian lunatics who think that it is okay to invade their neighbors,” the prime ministers of Poland, Slovakia, and Czechia warned in an article published on Monday.

Writing for the U.S. magazine Foreign Affairs, the leaders of three of the four Visegrád Group nations, with the exclusion of neutral Hungary, claimed that a partial victory for Ukraine “will solve nothing,” and urged Western allies to continue supporting Ukraine “until Russian forces withdraw from its territory entirely, putting a definitive end to the Kremlin’s revanchism and imperialism.”

The leaders stated that any talk of peace negotiations that do not result in Russia leaving Ukrainian territory would bring long-term instability and risk security and economic concerns in the region down the line. “It would allow Russia to regroup and rebuild its forces while continuing to wage political warfare and export its imperial ideology,” they added.

NATO member theorizes on Ukraine military’s key problem

Western-supplied weapons turn into “warehouse goods” due to lack of ammo, Czech President Petr Pavel says

A shortage of ammunition limits Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russian forces or successfully launch its mulled counteroffensive, Czech President Petr Pavel has said.

Pavel talked to the media on Sunday after his return from a three-day visit to Ukraine, during which he held talks with his Ukrainian counterpart, Vladimir Zelensky, and other officials in Kiev. He also traveled to the city of Dnepr, located not far from the frontline, becoming the first foreign leader to go to the eastern part of the country since the outbreak of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev more than a year ago.

The Czech president said that his many discussions with Ukrainian officials made it “quite clear that what Ukraine needs most of all for successful defense today is ammunition.”

Exclusive: Former Czech PM Václav Klaus quips that Czech-Hungarian relations are so poor that only Viktor Orbán’s resignation could improve the situation

In an exclusive interview with Remix News, former Czech Prime Minister and President Václav Klaus, an ally of PM Viktor Orbán, laments that relations between Hungary and Czechia have reached such a low point

May 08, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: JOHN CODY

Vaclav Klaus, A former Czech prime minister and president, underlines the poor state of Hungarian-Czech relations. (AP Photo/Czarek Sokolowski)

Many conservatives outside of Czechia are critical of the country’s political situation, saying it lacks a real conservative option. Do you agree with this view?

Conservatives in the Czech Republic have only lost ground since I left office. I was considered the last one keeping that flame alive. And now we have a tragic situation in parliament. The party I founded 32 years ago changed totally, has no connection with conservatism whatsoever, and there is no one — no party or person or movement — which could be considered conservative. So, the conservative people have no representation in parliament these days; so it’s a tragic, tragic development.
(...)
So, do conservatives have any voice in the press?

There are many, many interesting views out there, and I have three, four, five pieces published a week in journals and the front page. We are not totally blocked. The official, state-owned television would never invite me, but otherwise, I am on the front pages, so there are some voices.

Slovakia is overwhelmingly against their country sending weapons to Ukraine? What is the stance of the Czech population?

I think this is not a debate point in the Czech Republic. Weapon deliveries have never been openly discussed, and it’s just not honestly discussed. Our minister of defense (Jana Černochová) is a fundamental fighter for more war in Ukraine, but everyone is laughing at their position.

The real issue is that we in the Czech Republic are punished by our experience because there is still the way of thinking about the 1968 invasion by the Warsaw Pact, which means the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia. And to my great regret, to my great regret — well, not just a regret, I’m angry — is that some Czechs, even reasonable Czechs, are now fighting the 1968 war. Now, they think we didn’t fight at that moment, now we can fight this time. Again, even without our direct involvement.

Nevertheless, this is the mentality which I’m trying to fight and disagree with this, but I must admit that this is still the important feeling in the Czech Republic: Now, we can compensate for our lack of any activity in August ’68, which is unique. Poland was fighting, Hungary was fighting in ’56’

You are at CPAC Hungary and have long been an ally of Hungary’s PM Viktor Orbán. Are you working to improve Czech-Hungarian relations or do you think that with this current government, it’s a lost cause until a new government comes into power?

Well, I’m definitely not representing the (Czech) government. This is my starting point for answering your question.

What gesture could Hungarians do to improve Czech-Hungarian relations? Looking for a funny and simple answer: My first answer is that there is no gesture of any kind. And then I’ll say, well, the only gesture would be to announce that Viktor Orbán is resigning and that would be the best message for the current Czech government.

(Editor’s note: Klaus laughs at this point during the interview).

Ok, so that’s somewhat of an overstatement, but I certainly hope you understand I want to show how bad relations are between the two governments.

Czechia should do more to heal the wounds in the Visegrád Group, former PM Babiš claims

Andrej Babiš, leader of the Czech opposition ANO party, sat down with Hungarian newspaper Magyar Hírlap to discuss the Czech government’s failings, the current state of the Visegrád Group, and the upcoming CPAC Hungary event

May 02, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: THOMAS BROOKE

The incumbent Czech government has done little to ease the recent tensions that have arisen among the Visegrád Group, and restoring the alliance to its former glory would be a priority for a new administration headed by Andrej Babiš, the former Czech prime minister has said.

In an interview with Hungarian newspaper Magyar Hírlap ahead of his attendance at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Budapest on Friday, Babiš berated the current five-party Czech coalition government spearheaded by liberal Petr Fiala.

He claimed Czechia had failed to act as it should have to address tensions arising between fellow Visegrád nations, namely Poland’s disapproval of Hungary’s commitment to neutrality regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Asked whether the current Czech government has rejected close ties to the Visegrád Group, also known as the V4, the former Czech prime minister warned that a weakened V4 is a “big mistake” and “one that will negatively affect the Czech Republic long after this government falls.”

Czech PM vowed not to increase taxes before doing the exact opposite

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has now announced with great fanfare a slew of new taxes

May 15, 2023
editor: THOMAS BROOKE author: JAKUB FUJAČEK via: ECHO 24

“We are not going to raise people’s taxes, even though there is a certain demand here,” Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala declared on Nov. 11 last year in an interview for Blesk.

He stated that the only exception would be the so-called “war tax,” or tax on extraordinary profits imposed on energy companies, refineries, and banks. Although experts from the government’s National Economic Council (NERV) have long pointed out that there is no way to consolidate the public budget without raising taxes.

A few days before, Prime Minister Fiala repeated this in an interview for Respekt magazine, saying that the coalition parties had committed to this as part of the government’s program statement. “Many of us in the ODS (Civic Democratic Party) are convinced that it is better to have lower taxes and not to distribute money in such a way, which is why, even before the elections, the ODS agreed to the (opposition) ANO proposal (…) to reduce taxes,” Fiala said at the time.

However, the government’s program statement contained only vague formulations, claiming that the way to stabilize public finances does not lie in increasing the tax burden and including the promise that the government will introduce an unspecified ceiling for the amount of the tax burden.

Ukrainian soldiers begin training in Czechia

12/05/2022

Ukrainian soldiers have begun training here in Czechia, days after the country’s legislators approved such a move. Meanwhile, the country’s commitment to helping the country is reflected in a report that one Czech factory is producing a tank every four days for Ukraine.

nly last week both houses of the Czech Parliament passed a bill allowing for up to 4,000 Ukrainian soldiers to train on this country’s territory between now and the end of 2023.

Troops from Ukraine have already begun exercising that right, with the chief of staff of the Czech Army, Karel Řehka, saying on Sunday that some were in action in the army’s Libavá military zone in the Olomouc Region in the east of the country.

Number of Czech tenants defaulting on their rent triples in a year

The rental market in Czechia is in disarray, and experts believe the number of people renting could rise by 15% in the near future

June 06, 2023
editor: THOMAS BROOKE author: ZÁVIŠ DOBIAŠOVSKÝ via: ECHO 24

The number of people in Czechia who cannot pay their rent is increasing, with cases tripling year-over-year in some areas of the country.

A worsening economic situation and inefficient processes in relation to the rental market have led to a concerning rise in non-payments. Tenants often find it difficult to find alternative housing, resulting in an accumulation of debt, while landlords often experienced legal difficulties in evicting non-paying tenants, costing them significant time and financial resources.

According to data from the Ideal Tenants service, the number of defaulters rose by 11 percent year-over-year in the last quarter of 2022 before rising by 34 percent year-on-year in January.

“In the statistics we present, we consider a tenant as a defaulter when he owes more than one month and at least 500 crowns, in order to filter out possible small arrears that could have arisen through oversight,” spokesman Tomáš Skolek told Echo24.
